Our Newest Family Member

Well......Brandon and I finally did what we swore we wouldn't do for a very long time...........got a DOG!!!! Neither of us consider ourselves "pet" people and even though Brett has hinted about wanting a pet, we brushed him off and told ourselves when he got old enough to take care of it himself, THEN we would "consider" it. HA!! (I guess I can check off one more thing on the list of things I said I would NEVER do when I had kids!!!)
It all started when Brett caught a lizard and was determined to keep him as his pet. Once we got Mr. Lizard safe in his new home, Brett's first words were "YAY!! My very first pet!!!" He carried him around everywhere, even to "show and tell" at school. By the third day poor Mr. Lizard's hands, feet and tail were turning a little black and crusty-lookin and I knew his days were numbered. I tried and tried to talk Brett into letting him go back to his mommy so he wouldn't die, but Brett would have none of it. Finally, when Mr. Lizard was close to taking his last breaths, Brett agreed to let him go back to the bushes. As soon as we let him go, Brett burst into tears and kept saying he wanted a pet. I knelt down and held him, and reassured him that we would get him another pet. (In the mean-time, unbeknownst to Brett, Caroline decides to stomp on Mr. Lizard and pick him up and squeeze the last remaining breaths out of poor Mr. Lizard.)
So that's what got us thinking that maybe it was time for a pet. Brandon and I both grew up with pets, and we both enjoyed them, so we started looking online at different types of dogs. Brandon wanted an indoor pet, and very small, but he has allergies, so we settled on Yorkshire Terriers. We found a kennel here in town that breeds Yorkies, and we went last week only to LOOK. (I was imagining Christmas morning, and Brett waking up to a puppy licking his face......) But when we saw this cute lil guy with his ears all perked up, I couldn't wait till Christmas morning. (Plus, who wants to start house-training a dog on Christmas day, when there's company and food everywhere and all I want to do is sit and eat.)
So after a quick and expensive trip to Pet Smart, we brought Bingo home. Brett was stunned at first....didn't even smile or act excited. He asked if it was a joke!! Once he realized it was not a joke and it was his he got very excited about it. He has always named his imaginary pets "Bingo" so we knew that's what this dog's name would be. And you can't look at him and say his name without breaking into the song "B--I--N-G-O, B--I--N-G-O........"
So now I sit here, with Bingo on my lap, because he's really my dog ya know, not Brett's. I feed him, I take him out to potty, I bathe him, I change his blankies.... it's like another child. But then Brett plays with him. And laughs, oh, he laughs those deep, hilarious belly laughs, and that brings a huge smile to my face. So was it worth all this trouble? Oh yeah, it's been worth it....oh the lengths we go to see our children happy.
